A seasonal grounding
A gardener's year in east Cheshire.
One of the advantages of working with a gardener who studied Agriculture is that the work follows the seasons rather than a fixed script. Here's roughly how the year runs across the gardens we look after in Macclesfield, Prestbury and Alderley Edge — a guide to what tends to matter when, so you know what a well-cared-for garden needs through the year.
Spring
March – MayThe busy re-start. First cuts of the season, borders cleared and edged, and planting while the ground is warming and workable. It's the right window to get overgrown gardens back under control before everything races away.
Summer
June – AugustThe regular round hits its stride — mowing and striping, hedges trimmed while in active growth, and beds kept tidy and watered through the dry spells. This is when a well-kept lawn and clean edges really show.
Autumn
September – NovemberLeaf clearance, final hedge cuts, and putting the garden to bed — cutting back, tidying borders and clearing fallen leaves off lawns before they smother the grass over winter.
Winter
December – FebruaryThe structural season. The quieter months are ideal for the bigger jobs — clearance, hard tidy-ups, difficult hedges and reshaping — while the garden is dormant and there's less growth to work around.
What shapes a quote
A few things we'll look at.
- The size of the garden and how much of it we're looking after.
- Ground conditions — how even, overgrown or established the plot is.
- How often you'd like us: a one-off tidy, or a regular seasonal round.
- The kind of work: mowing and hedges, planting, clearance or a full transformation.
- Whether you'd like us to keep the garden right through the year afterwards.
The best way to get a real figure is a free consultation. Will will walk the garden with you, tell you straight what's involved and when it's best done, and put a clear, no-obligation quote to it — no pressure either way.
